Property Tax

  1. Disabled Veteran Homestead Property Tax Exemption100% P&T
    Exemption from certain property taxes

Veterans rated 100% permanent and total (P&T) disabled by the VA may be exempt from certain ad valorem property taxes on their homestead. Administered through the county assessor under W. Va. Code §11-6B. The WV Veterans Affairs page states the requirement as '100 percent permanent and disabled by the federal Department of Veterans Affairs.' — VERIFIED: The current (2024+) West Virginia disabled-veteran property benefit is the Disabled Veteran Real Property Tax Credit, NOT the old 100% P&T flat homestead exemption that the research leads with. Per WV Tax Division publication TSD 455 (Rev. January 2026): honorably discharged veterans considered 90-100% permanently and totally (P&T) disabled by the VA may claim a credit equal to the ACTUAL real property tax paid on a homestead used/occupied exclusively for residential purposes (used or occupied at least 6 months). The credit is claimed on Form DV-1 / IT-140 Line 21(B); property taxes must be paid timely (first half before Oct 1, second half before Apr 1). Threshold is 90-100% P&T (P&T required), and the extent is the full property tax actually paid (a refundable income-tax credit), not a $20,000 partial assessed-value exemption. The research's second property item (the 90% credit) is essentially correct; its first item (100% P&T flat homestead exemption as the headline benefit) is outdated/superseded for veterans as of Jan 1, 2024.

  2. Disabled Veteran Real Property Tax Credit (Income Tax Credit)90%+ rating
Credit equal to property tax paid on homestead

The credit is claimed on the state income tax return. First available on 2024 returns filed in 2025. Property taxes must be paid on time (first half by Oct 1, second half by Apr 1).
